Nestled in the heart of San Antonio, TX, St. Jeanne's Personal Care Home draws its name and inspiration from the extraordinary life of Saint Jeanne Jugan, also known as Mary of the Cross. Our founders, deeply moved by her dedication to serving the elderly poor, chose to honor her legacy by creating a personal care home that embodies her values of compassion, dignity, and love.
The Inspiration Behind Our Name
Jeanne Jugan, born in 1792 in the small French port city of Cancale, Brittany, grew up amidst the political and religious upheavals of the French Revolution. Her humble beginnings and early experiences shaped her into a woman of profound faith and unwavering commitment to the needy.
It was her encounter with Anne Chauvin, an elderly, blind, and partially paralyzed woman, that sparked the beginning of her life's mission.
Jugan took Chauvin into her own home, providing her with care and comfort.
Word of Jeanne Jugan's kindness spread, and soon, she was caring for more elderly individuals in need.
In 1841, she rented a room to accommodate a dozen elderly people, and a year later, she acquired an unused convent building to house even more.
Her selfless acts laid the foundation for the religious congregation known as The Little Sisters of the Poor, dedicated to caring for the elderly who have no other resources.
